FAIRBANKS, Alaska — A 32-year-old Eielson Air Force Base airman is on trial for attempted murder in Fairbanks but the first state trooper to investigate says he saw no indication that the victim had been choked.

Airman Joseph Basom is charged with trying to kill his wife in August at their North Pole home.

Troopers arrested him a few hours later in Delta Junction. His breath-alcohol was almost twice the legal limit.

Basom’s public defenders contend the couple had an argument but that his wife attacked him first.

Trooper Gary Tellep testified Friday he first contacted Kelsi Basom at a neighbor’s house.
