Disruptions at Humphreys likely in July

PYEONGTAEK, South Korea — Road closures, water outages and other disruptions at Camp Humphreys will probably start occurring in July as workers move forward on a major upgrade to the post’s utilities, officials said Monday.

Officials will notify the community before closing sections of road or shutting off water or electricity, said David Voelker, acting chief of master planning for the U.S. Army Garrison-Humphreys’ public works department.

The disruptions will be part of a four-year, $450 million project to build new roads, walkways and bike paths, upgrade the post’s electrical, water and sewer systems and its communications network, install new lighting, and make other improvements.

The project is seen as critical to transforming the post into the U.S. military’s main installation in South Korea.

Six hundred new structures will go up and the post’s population is expected to go from its current level of about 10,000 to about 64,000, said garrison spokeswoman Lori Yerdon.
