FAIRBANKS, Alaska — A Superior Court judge has declared a mistrial in the case of an Eielson Air Force Base airman accused of trying to kill his wife.

Thirty-two-year-old Joseph Basom remains jailed on charges that include attempted murder. A new trial is set for April.

Three days into the trial, prosecutors learned of a letter that Basom had written to his wife.

Defense attorney Amy Allen says information in the letter prejudices her case and that she would have used different defense tactics had she known about the letter sooner.

Judge Paul Lyle on Tuesday said he could not see a way to fix the problem and declared a mistrial.
