YOKOHAMA, Japan — A fire broke out early Saturday at a hangar at the U.S. Navy’s Atsugi base in Kanagawa prefecture, with three Japanese men sustaining burns, two of them seriously, police and firefighters said.

The three were working to remove asbestos from tile flooring in the hangar along with four other workers, they said. No aircraft or ammunition were stored in the wooden hangar.

The fire, which damaged part of the hangar, was extinguished about 90 minutes later by Navy personnel and firefighters, they said.

The fire broke out when a light bulb fell and broke as workers were spreading thinner on the floor to peel off the tiles, they said.
