CORONADO, Calif. — The Navy will spend as much as $600,000 to modify the appearance of a barracks complex that resembles a swastika from the air, officials said.

The Navy approved the spending for changes to the four L-shaped buildings’ walkways, landscaping and rooftop solar panels after satellite images from Google Earth revealed the swastika-like shape, officials said.

“We don’t want to be associated with something as symbolic and hateful as a swastika,” Scott Sutherland, deputy public affairs officer for Navy Region Southwest, told the Los Angeles Times.

“I’m concerned about symbolism,” he said. “This is not the type of message America needs to be sending to the world.”

The Navy decided to alter the buildings’ shape following requests this year by Anti-Defamation League regional director Morris Casuto and Rep. Susan Davis, D-Calif.

“I don’t ascribe any intentionally evil motives to this,” Casuto said of the design. “It just happened. The Navy has been very good about recognizing the problem. The issue is over.”

The funds to change the buildings’ appearance were budgeted for the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1, officials said.

1. The big question is, who was the architect of the building,
Edited on Sat Sep-29-07 07:47 AM by Xipe Totec
and how could he have possibly not known what he was doing?

One central document obtained by Avrahaum Segol is a copy of an architectural document submitted to the US Navy, by the architectural firm that designed the Coronado swastika complex, that was signed off on by US Navy Rear Admiral Robert R. Wooding on March 5, 1968.

According to Naval Public Affairs Officer Steve Fiebing :

"The original plans submitted to the Navy for the project included... a single "L"-shaped 3 story barracks. The plan called for the "L"-shaped dormitory building to be repeated three times and placed at 90-degree angles to the central buildings."

Fiebing's account suggests that Navy officials were shown a proposed architectural design of one "L"-shaped barracks with the additional instruction, probably written, that the "L"-shaped barracks was to be repeated three more times. But, the vicinity map obtained by Avrahaum Segol, that was signed off on March 5, 1968 by United States Rear Admiral Robert Reynolds Wooding, does not show a single "L" shaped building at all. It depicts four "L"-shaped buildings that form a swastika shape. Fiebing's account is directly contradicted by the vicinity map Rear Admiral Wooding signed.
