Recruit abuse trial set for January

SAN DIEGO — A Marine drill instructor and Iraq war veteran appeared in court Tuesday but declined to enter pleas to 17 counts related to the abuse of recruits.

Sgt. Robert C. Hankins was ordered to face special court-martial proceedings on Jan. 7.

He was the third Marine to appear in the case before a military judge at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot near downtown San Diego.

Another drill instructor, Sgt. Jerrod M. Glass, was arraigned in August on 225 counts of abusing recruits in 110 cases between Dec. 23 and Feb. 10. Glass faces general court-martial on Nov. 8. He postponed making a plea during a previous court appearance.

No member of the platoon was seriously injured, according to the Marines.

Hankins was charged in August with one count each of assault and destruction of personal property, three counts of maltreatment and seven counts of failing to report a serious offense.
