A battered and dirty school in the Salhiyah neighborhood of central Baghdad was scheduled to reopen for classes on Sunday after being cleaned up, repaired, and given new equipment.

The Omar Muktar Boys’ School held a ceremony last week to mark the improvements.

It was attended by soldiers from Troop A, 4th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division and the Salhiyah Neighborhood Advisory Council.

The troops and council have worked to renovate and reopen three schools in Salhiyah, according to a news release issued late Saturday by Multi–National Corps–Iraq.

The Omar Muktar Boys’ School serves 1,000 secondary and high-school aged students.

“The school was thrashed before — windows broken, garbage everywhere, classrooms in disarray, not painted, ceilings corroded,” said Capt. Joseph Guzowski, commander of Troop A.

uhc comment: The availability of water and electricity was not mentioned in the article. We know both items were in short supply this summer.
