Major comes out of retirement to teach ROTC

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — The Army was downsizing, and Maj. Joe Holman took early retirement in 1995, after more than 17 years in the service.

He found plenty to keep himself busy in the towns and wilds of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where he was raised and where he earned his commission as a second lieutenant through the University of Northern Michigan’s ROTC program.

After the Army, he worked as a trainer, “creating new programs and fixing broken ones,” in fields as diverse as bus driving, real estate, ballroom dance, wine tasting and building Web-based courses at Northern Michigan.

He admires West Point and the officers who come out of the academy, he said, “but kids who come out of ROTC programs have been exposed to the values and beliefs of all those campuses. They have seen the diversity that makes up our nation. They are America.

“I’ve been watching the cadets here the past few days. They look good,” he said. “They’re on their way to being good leaders.”
