Soldier says he faked shooting Iraqi

WHEELER ARMY AIRFIELD, Hawaii — An Army soldier from Georgia accused of murdering an unarmed Iraqi said Thursday he faked shooting the man because he was afraid of openly disobeying an order his volatile and violent platoon sergeant had issued to “finish him.”

Spc. Christopher P. Shore, speaking at a hearing held to determine whether he should be tried for premeditated murder in the June 23 shooting, said his platoon sergeant, Sgt. 1st Class Trey Corrales, shot the man several times in the backyard of a house they had finished searching.

Shore, 25, said Corrales then turned to him and told him to kill the man.

“I didn’t know what to do. I just saw him shoot somebody,” Shore said, explaining he was terrified of what Corrales might do to him if he refused to follow through with the order.

After quickly considering his options, Shore said he chose to fire two shots but intentionally missed the man.

“I shot off to the side of his head,” said Shore, of Winder, Ga.
