Music honoring pararescue jumpers debuts

For injured troops, the sound of helicopters bringing Air Force pararescuemen is sweet music.

On Nov. 6, an Air Force composer will debut music of his own, dedicated to the service’s storied corps of pararescue jumpers, or PJs.

Staff Sgt. Jeremy Martin used to be staff composer and arranger for the Air Force Band at Travis Air Force Base, Calif. While there, he wrote an 11-minute wind piece titled “That Others May Live,” named after the PJ motto.

Martin and the Travis band made a recording of the work but were unable to make a public debut of the piece. On Nov. 6, the composition will finally get its first live performance as the University of Alabama Wind Ensemble plays at the campus music building. Martin said he hopes to see as many current and former PJs as possible, as the Air Force ROTC unit on campus will make a special presentation to honor the rescuers.
