Special pays set for Navy doctors, dentists

Navy doctors can pocket as much as an extra $114,000 in incentive pay packages aimed at enhancing doctor retention under Defense Department guidelines released Tuesday.

Guidelines call for anesthesiologists and neurosurgeons who have completed eight years of military service to receive $100,000 in incentive special pay and multiyear special pay when they agree to extend their service obligation for four years.

From that point, combined incentive special pay and multiyear special pay is available to Navy doctors and dentists depending on whether they extend for two, three or four years, and on the level of need for their specialty.

Pediatricians, for example, would collect $38,000 for a four-year extension and $25,000 for agreeing to serve two more years.

Pay tables are adjusted every year by the Defense Department, depending on the Navy’s need for and the availability of certain medical specialties, said William Marin, program manager for Medical and Dental Officer Special Pay Plans.

In addition to incentive and multiyear special pay, every board-certified doctor can earn up to an additional $14,000 this year for variable special pay and board-certified pay, depending upon whether they have completed an internship and the amount of time they have served.
