Career fields may expand with Cyber Command
Career fields may expand with Cyber Command

SHREVEPORT, La. — Air Force Cyber Command should lead to greater opportunities for enlisted personnel and officers, as well as revision to Air Force specialty codes, says the general who is heading to Barksdale Air Force Base to organize the new force.

“Our traditional warrior has been an officer who goes off in an aircraft,” said Maj. Gen. William Lord, who has paid one visit to Barksdale to learn the lay of the land and will come here to stay Oct. 30.

“That may also change the nature and opportunities for our enlisted force, and I do think it will expand to what we call our nonrated force, some leadership opportunities,” he said.

Lord, who is not a rated pilot, is charged with putting together the organization, training and other details to create an operational framework for doing, on a daily basis, what Air Force Cyber-Strike and other operations at Barksdale have shown can and will work in practice.

The work of showing that cyberspace is a domain in which warfare can be conducted was pioneered by 8th Air Force under Lt. Gen. Robert J. Elder Jr.

But Lord thinks cyber will draw the best from all levels, enlisted and up through the noncommissioned and commissioned officer levels. “A lot of the offensive capability that we have in the Air Force is through the brilliance of a lot of our enlisted force.”
