Wesleyan Puts Out Call for Veterans
Wesleyan Puts Out Call for Veterans
Hartford Courant | November 19, 2007

MIDDLETOWN -- -- Wesleyan University cherishes diversity, but one group does not have much of a presence at this liberal arts college: veterans.

Of Wesleyan's roughly 2,900 students, perhaps two have military backgrounds, according to a university spokesman.

Soon they will be a little less lonely. Two alumni have endowed scholarships for up to 10 former service members, beginning with students entering next fall.

The amount of the gift by Frank Sica, a 1973 graduate of the university, and Jonathan Soros, son of billionaire philanthropist George Soros and a 1992 Wesleyan graduate, was not disclosed, though it was described in a university press release as "substantial."

The Wesleyan initiative is one of several efforts to help veterans raise their profile at colleges and universities throughout the nation. California has launched a campaign, "Troops to College," to double the number of veterans enrolled in the California State University system.

Philanthropists also are joining the cause. Financier and World War II veteran Jerome Kohlberg created the Fund for Veterans, which will dole out need-based scholarships to veterans from all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
