CFC issues new shredding policy
CFC issues new shredding policy
By Jimmy Norris, Stars and Stripes
Pacific edition, Wednesday, December 5, 2007

SEOUL — The Combined Forces Command recently issued an order directing that all work-related documents — everything from outdated recall rosters to the paper the new policy was printed on — be shredded instead of discarded with the trash.

Dan Wilkinson, CFC operations security officer, said there was no “smoking gun” that prompted the Nov. 13 order, but that it came after “a compilation of assessments” conducted locally and by the Joint Operations Security Support Center, out of San Antonio.

U.S. Forces Korea officials declined a Stars and Stripes request for a copy of the order, stating that it was considered “for official use only.”

In an article posted on the U.S. Forces Korea Web site, Wilkinson said digging through trash bins for sensitive information “is an internationally recognized strategy for obtaining information.”

Wilkinson said items found in USFK trash bins during inspections have included discarded technical manuals, permanent change of station orders and recall rosters.

“Recently some sharp individuals from an organization on Yongsan noticed a lot of stuff in a dumpster that shouldn’t have been” thrown away, Wilkinson said. “It looked like someone had cleaned out their office.”
