CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — Three Special Operations Marines and an interpreter said they heard small-arms fire after their convoy was attacked by a suicide vehicle bomb in Afghanistan last year, during testimony on the third day of a special military inquiry into the incident.

The four witnesses called Wednesday, assigned to the Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command, Fox Company platoon that was attacked March 4, 2007, said they did not see anyone outside the convoy firing at them or holding weapons.

Each of the men described what they saw and heard following the bomb blast in Nangarhar Province during the hearing, focused on Maj. Fred Galvin, 38, former Fox Company commander, and Capt. Vincent Noble, 29, the platoon commander and convoy leader. Both men were in the convoy at the time of the attack.

The pair and six others in the company were sent back to Camp Lejeune shortly after the entire 120-man company was pulled from Afghanistan following the attack and subsequent firefight, which some reports claim ended with the deaths of 19 Afghan civilians.

Sgt. Brett Hayes was sitting in the left-rear seat in the second of six Humvees in the convoy, the closest vehicle to the blast.
