USAREUR gets new command surgeon
By Charlie Reed, Stars and Stripes
European edition, Thursday, January 10, 2008

U.S. Army Europe officially got a new command surgeon Wednesday.

Col. Keith W. Gallagher replaced Brig. Gen. David A. Rubenstein during a change of command ceremony at USAREUR headquarters in Heidelberg, Germany. Rubenstein is being promoted to major general and will serve as the Army’s deputy surgeon general in Falls Church, Va.

Having held the USAREUR position since August 2006, Rubenstein previously served as assistant surgeon general for force protection.

“David came to this command with fire in his belly to take on the challenges of transforming health care in Europe. He’s done that magnificently,” Gen. David McKiernan, USAREUR commander, said of Rubenstein in a news release.

Lt. Gen. Eric B. Schoomaker, commander of U.S. Army Medical Command, awarded Rubenstein the Distinguished Service Medal.
