Forty-five sailors and 36 Marines worldwide died riding motorcycles in fiscal year 2007.

Seventy-nine percent of those fatalities involved individuals who had not taken a formal motorcycle training course, according to the military.

To help reduce those numbers, Naval Air Facility Atsugi officials held a mandatory safety meeting Wednesday for all motorcyclists.

About 80 of the 193 registered motorcyclists at Atsugi attended the meeting, said Atsugi Traffic Safety Manager Wendel Dunn. Dunn said he expects more meetings to be held in the near future for those who didn’t show.

Cmdr. Tommy Yambrick, the commanding officer of Strike Fighter Squadron 102, talked to the group about obeying the base rules, both on and off base.
