MADISON, Wis. — A man who was on leave from military service in Iraq and driving drunk when he caused a traffic crash that killed two people faces a 13-year prison term.
Authorities said Ian Bowers, 20, of Sun Prairie, drove through a Madison stop sign at about 75 mph on Christmas night 2006 and collided with a car driven by Brian McNally, 26, of Waunakee. A witness said Bowers appeared to be racing with another car.
Killed were McNally and Rikita Lee, 21, a passenger in Bowers’ car. Two others were injured.
“I don’t consider you to be a bad person,” Dane County Circuit Judge Steven Ebert said at the sentencing Friday. “I do consider you to be a person who did something horrendous, that has just torn the fabric of two families.”
He sentenced Bowers to six years in prison on each count of homicide by drunken driving, plus one year on a charge of causing injury by drunken driving. Ebert also ordered Bowers was to serve 15 years of extended supervision after his release.
