Reservists may get more time at home

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — Marine reservists are close to getting another year off between deployments.

“We’re just about there,” said Lt. Gen. Jack Bergman, Marine Forces Reserve commander, in a Dec. 13 telephone interview.

Reservists currently operate on a 1:4 ratio — one year mobilized and four years demobilized. But in early 2007, Defense Secretary Robert Gates set a 1:5 ratio as a goal in his revised Total Force Utilization Policy.

To achieve his goal, the Corps developed a model that looks at active-duty and reserve units, then lays out future reserve unit activations and total force deployment schedules. The Force Generation Model, as it’s called, does a couple of things for the Corps’ reserves. One, it gives reservists predictability.

“The question comes up, ‘When will I go again? When can I go again?’” Bergman said. “That has allowed us to bring a level of predictability to their life. It will carry us through the foreseeable future. If you’ve got that predictability, you can plan your training schedule around it, your recruiting schedule around it and your funding schedule around it.”
