Multiskill ratings may be needed for LCS
Multiskill ratings may be needed for LCS

Littoral Combat Ship sailors could see the establishment of new ratings for jobs that now fall under multiple rates, according to the Navy admiral in charge of manning, training and equipping the surface fleet.

Vice Adm. Terrance Etnyre, commander of Naval Surface Forces based in San Diego, told reporters Monday at the Pentagon that because of the 40-person crew size slated for LCS, sailors must be able to do multiple tasks well beyond their current rating descriptions.

“Small crews have to be able to multitask,” Etnyre said. “They have to be able to do more than one thing well.

“For every billet on the LCS, a certain set of knowledge, skills and abilities a sailor has to have and we don’t have any rating in the Navy today that handles all of the skill sets that a particular billet needs to do,” Etnyre added.

For example, he said, a sailor in charge of the information technology onboard LCS will also be required to man the communications gear.
