The Times of London is reporting Al Gore to broker convention deal
Al Gore, the former vice-president, was revealed yesterday to be waiting in the wings to broker a deal should the “superdele-gates”, comprising 796 party figures, end up with a casting vote.

The New York Times reported that he had held talks with Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the former presidential candidates John Edwards, Joe Biden and Chris Dodd over how to avoid a bruising party battle. Tempers have been running high within the Clinton camp.

1. Here's a better link to the Times UK article
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/us_elections/article3382295.ece

Wonder what Gore is saying to both of them... 'Hillary, hang it up' or 'why don't you two combine on one ballot'? Glad he's part of the solution. Somehow, that doesn't surprise me.

I am very reluctant to hope that he could be the choice without irreparable damage to the DEM Party... but who knows what will happen? Maybe it will be the peaceful solution to what we will have at the convention. Between the two candidates, they have spent $230 million to date. Will their $$ supporters be willing to allow another come in at the finish line and take the prize? I don't see how that could be good for the winner of that prize...

3. I don't know what he's saying but I'd like to think something has crossed his mind
specifically, "now you know why I didn't ask Bill to campaign more" because he ends up being a bigger distraction than big campaign boost.

At this point it appears the bigger winner is the GOP. With the two factions going at each other hot and heavy it is creating a lot of hard feelings at all levels of the party. What's going on isn't benefiting the party. It isn't benefiting anyone.

4. He certainly has attained the wise and trusted
elder statesman status hasn't he? Do you think there is a chance of a brokered convention at this point?

5. Are you kidding me?
He's America's best ambassador right now. He's probably one of the most trusted and respected people in the world.

There's always a chance of a brokered convention. Neither side sounds like they're giving up and all it is doing is splitting the party more and more. As they continually launch attacks on each other it looks better and better.

6. You know, I have been hoping and praying for a brokered
convention and now that its a possibility, I think it will tear the party apart. Just look at GDP... their nuts up there. If they were to find out that neither of their candidates would make it all the way, all hell would break loose. I hope that Gore and Dean have a handle on this wild hare.

7. Did you see KO's Countdown
He talked about Gore and how he is the peace broker of the Democratic party right now. I just had to use the word "broker" ;).

Gore and Dean have a really good handle on what the people in the party want. Dean spent a lot of time traveling around - under the radar of the press - rebuilding the Democratic party. Gore has also spent a lot of time traveling around - again, under the radar of the press - talking to people. I believe they have a handle on what's going on. They spend time talking to people, not at them.

8. I have a feeling it would work out well
I have read several threads in the GDP about a Gore nom coming out of a brokered convention. There are some people against it, but many more for it. I saw lots of people with Clinton and Obama avatars saying either "I could live with that" or "that would be great".

I have a feeling that a lot of the Clinton supporters are supporting her as the ABO candidate, and a lot of the Obama supporters see him as the ABC candidate. The people that supported them from the beginning might not be as happy.

I see their supporters as falling into a few groups: a) the people who supported them from the beginning because they really thought they were the best candidate; b) the people who supported them from the beginning becase the corporate media told them they were inevitable; c) the people who supported one because they were trying to stop the other (ABO and ABC); and d) the people who support them now because their preferred candidates are out. I think most people in groups b, c and d would be fine with a brokered convention resulting in a Gore nom. Some of the people in group a would be fine with it because they would have supported Gore in the first place if he had run. So that's a big majority right there. Then half of the ones that are left can be converted to supporting a Gore nom if their candidate is picked as the VP.

I can't see Clinton being a VP to Gore, with their history, but I could see Obama accepting that slot.
