Festival revives Celtic Christmas

Traditions of Christmas past dating back 1,500 years are being revived at a Denbighshire festival.
A Father Christmas dressed in green was riding into Llangollen, a yule altar set up and the tradition of the Mari Llwyd - or grey mare - revived.

Saturday's celebration aims to show how many modern-day Christmas traditions are rooted in Celtic history.

Organiser Sarah Meade said many ancient Celtic traditions carried on in Wales until the 1960s.

She said: "Everything about the festive period is a hotch-potch of ancient pagan traditions and more modern marketing practices all spun together under the Christian celebration of the birth of Christ.
