This atheist finds he needs a foxhole
Just ask Army Spc. Jeremy Hall, who is making a splash in the news because of the way his atheism was attacked by superiors and fellow soldiers while he was risking his life in service to his country.

Hall, 23, served two combat tours in Iraq, winning the Combat Action Badge. But he's now stationed at Fort Riley, Kan., having been returned stateside early because the Army couldn't ensure his safety.

1. What a crappy headline
For an otherwise good article.

Jeremy Hall collects his thoughts at a coffee shop near Fort Riley, Kan., where he has been assigned a bodyguard for his own protection.

2. What a shame.
I guess atheism in the military is the new gay.

The only way to explain xtian fundamentalism in our troops serving in Iraq is that obviously they (the troops) are being brainwashed to believe that this war is a xtian war. How else can you explain to a soldier that he's there for no reason? So you make it seem they are being attacked for being a xtian not because they are part of a foreign invasion. Imagine he is an atheist, I don't even want to think how muslim soldiers are treated.

3. Gotta love those good ol' xtian values....
This is absolutely fucking insane!!

Why is that people that mumble to themselves with their hands together, talk to themselves and claim that they have invisible friends is seen as SANE!!?

If I had to choose who to be in a foxhole with, a religious nut or an Atheist, I am going with the guy that wants to live and not one that wants to meet the invisible man in the sky.

4. There's a delicious irony in all this.
The end result is that now his life is LESS in danger than it was before.

5. Wasn't Pat Tillman an atheist? Is that why he was shot?

6. I heard that yes, he was an atheist, and
I've often wondered if that's why he was shot. It's not outlandish to wonder that.

7. I really haven't run into issues with it.
Maybe I've just been lucky, or else maybe my career field (Computer Systems Operator) in the Air Force doesn't lend itself to evangelical recruits.

Or maybe they just know I don't have any issue with going to MEO and naming names.

Atheist has more time to file arguments

The Associated Press
Posted : Tuesday Jul 29, 2008 13:26:42 EDT

TOPEKA, Kan. — Attorneys for a Fort Riley soldier suing the government over alleged religious freedom violations have been granted more time to file arguments with the federal court.

A Kansas City, Kan., judge granted the request Tuesday, giving attorneys for Spc. Jeremy Hall and the Military Religious Freedom Foundation until Sept. 15 to file the documents.

Those arguments will respond to the government’s motion to dismiss the case, which has been filed against an Army reservist and Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

Hall and the foundation allege his religious freedoms were violated while he was serving in Iraq last year. In addition, they claim that Gates permits a culture of Christian fundamentalism within the military.
