"Oh, nobody could take that literally!"

The usual Xian response when someone points out that Communion is really just a form of cannibalism, or other gory stuff in the Bible.

Psst! Wanna see a guy who DID take it literally?

That link takes you to the IMdB entry for Albert Fish: In Sin He Found Salvation (2007).

For those who are not sick...er, amateur true crime fans like me, and may not know who Fish was, I can do no better than quote this IMDB reviewer:

Strong stomachs and nerves of steel are required in order to sit through this "shockomentary" revolving on the crimes and confessions of Albert Fish; sadomasochist, cannibal and undoubtedly the most perverted serial child-killer in the history of the United States.

The reviewer could have added "devoutly religious." Fish especially loved the Bible story of Abraham and Isaac. He often emulated Jesus (not to mention Mel Gibson) by flagellating himself with whips and shoving nails into his body.

In the documentary, one of the last quotes we hear from Fish is: "God still has work for me to do."

Bonus Cultural Whim-Wham: Fish was examined by the psychologist Fredric Wertham. Yep, THAT Fredric Wertham...the asshat do-gooder who got EC horror comics banned in the 1950's because of their possible effects on youth. Maybe he should have worked on banning the Bible.

A fictionalized account of the Fish case was just released on DVD, The Gray Man. Definitely worth watching, and proof that "low-budget" doesn't have to mean "cheap." It really evokes New York City in the 1920's and Thirties:

1. I believe it is official Catholic dogma that "literally" is exactly how they take it.

2. Yep, that's part of the reason why they got so upset at PZ Myers.
Destroying a communion wafer isn't a big deal. Destroying it AFTER a priest chants his magic spell to turn it literally into some mythical being's body, THAT'S the crime.
