Our billboard is causing a stir in south Florida.
Edited on Fri Jul-03-09 11:26 AM by immoderate
Florida Atheists and Secular Humanists has put up a message billboard in Ft. Lauderdale and it's getting a lot of coverage so far.

Fox news story here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHcdi5XC4Kk

Fox News says we put it up in a "religious neighborhood." Hello... there aren't any atheist neighborhoods in south Florida. The woman in the video, known locally as "Fat Mama" alerted the media, which have caused our web hits to rise astronomically. Our website is:
http://www.freethoughtflorida.com/index.html
(Atheist parents may be interested in our winter break Camp Quest.)

We had our monthly First Supper (sponsored by our frequent partner, Broward Center for Inquiry) dinner last night, and it was suggested we buy flowers for Fat Mama. LOL.

1. Seeing them yell at the sign reminded me of...
...that whole "graven images" thing.

Thou shalt not rant at inanimate objects. Especially when thee are just showing off for the media-harlots.

Or something like that.

Thanks. I'm happy to see these signs popping up all over the country. At least they remind people we are out here.

2. The right sign in the right place.
There is a strong chance some in that community are atheists and there seems to be a lot of hatred for atheists in that community.

3. Wonderful board....looks great...
When they come out and bitch like they do, it just shows me just how insecure they really our in their religion.

6. Yeah. Notice they blame the board for drugs and gangs.
Thanks for the compliments. I'll pass them along.

4. These people scare me.
I haven't gotten one bit of flak in the five or so years I've been saying I'm an atheist and don't think I've ever met anyone who would get that upset about a billboard. Well, maybe my ultra-conservative evangelical Christian friend who attacked the war protester with the sign that said "Jesus was a liberal pacifist." She thought that was horribly disrespectful. I don't pretend to understand.

Long before I became an atheist, I thought it seemed like a reasonable position.

7. Don't know where you live...
but people in the babble belt work themselves into a lather about atheists. We are probably one notch lower than homosexuals in their eyes. Oh, and don't even bring up that if Christ were alive today he would be branded a hippy- most christians down here are fire and brimstone christians.

8. A wholly innocuous message
Yet, God's posse loses their shit and dogpiles on the nearest business. Because proximity to a billboard denotes ownership. These are the sort of people who'll yell at a waitress because the prices are too high.

"Mama" is aptly named. She couldn't muster anyone other than kids for backup.

"Wrong sign at the wrong place"? Whoo-ee. Fox's cheap manufactured controversies makes for riveting television, I tell you.

No kidding. What An idiotic statement for the reporter to make.

If you find an atheist neighborhood somewhere in the US, I'd like to know where it is.

10. My nieghborhood may qualify
Not completely atheist.Mostly buddhist or something similar.
Very few christians though. The only christian church in the hood advertises itself as an 'alternative' worship service. Not much of a following there.

11. Some of our members tried to patronize the businesses in the neighborhood.
But were turned away. :(
