Would You Take A Job At A Place That Advertised Itself As A "Xian Company?"
I'm out of work and looking at job boards, and I see companies advertising to "come work for a Christian company." These aren't all churches. They're regular old companies. Here's one I found today on craiglist:

Christian Company Expanding-Looking to Make a Positive Change in 2010?
Date: 2009-12-29, 10:10AM PST

Are you looking to make a change in your life and to help others? Multi-million dollar Christian based company expanding locally. Seeking motivated, honest people with an entrepreneurial spirit to help coordinate sales, training and recruiting efforts.

Training and ongoing mentoring is provided.

As an atheist, I pass right over these. I can't imagine what it would like working at a place that felt it needed to put that out in a job listing. In fact, I can't imagine being so desperate that I'd go down that road.

How about you? Would such a proviso make you steer clear entirely, or are there situations where you'd give it a shot?

1. I was about to say yes, but not that company...

They want hustlers, and that's not my bag. If they were selling religion, I couldn't do that either. But, if it was a company that treated its customers and employees using christian (note the small c) ethics, then I would consider it.

I've dealt with some Christians who were among the finest people I know, though for the wrong reasons. I would work for them.

On edit: I should remind those who know, and inform those who don't that I am culturally Jewish, and I would not be able to "pass," nor would I attempt to. So some of those Christian jobs are inappropriate for me. So while I wouldn't tell them that I was an atheist, I couldn't say I was a Christian either.

As a contractor, I've worked for a few Christian companies. They call them "ministries." One guy wanted me to show him how to spam his followers. When we were done he asks, "So you go to church?"

I told him I was Jewish and figured I was off the hook. Nope. He comes back with, "So, you go to synagogue?"

I didn't hesitate. "Every chance I get." O8)

2. I wouldn't have to worry about it.
They wouldn't touch me with a ten foot pole.

3. Yeah, not THAT company.
It'd eventually get around to talking about how great it is to be xtian, and I don't lie about shit like that.

4. I would probably steer clear unless I was really desperate
and could find nothing else.

5. Made that mistake once.
This was when I was still a believer. I took a summer job with a swimming pool servicing company, a family business. The owner's father told me during the interview that they ran their business "by the Lord Jesus Christ." I hardly need mention that they were the most obnoxious assholes I ever met.

7. Did they have a fish on their business cards?

This is sort of on-topic.

I ran into two bucketheads like that one time, at a trade show. They were from a company in Tulsa, OK that manufactured electronic wire and cable.

You'd think they were at that function to get new business, but they sure had a peculiar way of doing so.

They came up to our hospitality suite, which was full of folks from all over the world - Saudis, Israelis, Japanese, etc. etc.

A couple of us were talking about science fiction, and I mentioned a famous short story where Gawd turns out to be a computer.

They immediately launched into some long-winded - and fairly LOUD - proselytizing. I hadn't attacked Xianity or anything close to it - just described the plot of the story. Still, you'd have thought I had asked if their mothers were still turning tricks or something.

At another trade show and another hospitality suite, in Washington, DC, some asshole loudly declared that Colin Powell was a "baby-killer" because of his position on abortion.

The room went dead quiet and the temperature dropped about 20 degrees. Since the room was full of people who knew Powell personally and had worked for or with him.

The proselytizer quietly finished his 25th free tumbler of bourbon and quietly slunk out.

No, I would NOT work for a company that's run "by the Lord Jesus X."

6. If there is no "Fire at will" in your state..
as we have in Indiana, you should apply.

Then once you have the job, do not be shy about your Atheism. Because if they fire you for any reason, you could sue their ass off for discrimination.

10. And they could always claim
that you knew it was a Christian company going in, that prayer at meetings and other Christian observances were expected, and that you came in under false pretenses. Maybe you'd win in court, maybe not, but you'd almost certainly be looking for another job in the end anyway, and who needs that kind of aggravation?

8. No
There's really nothing in my field that's an "Xtian company" (cancer research). Somehow, science and fundieness don't seem to cross paths, thankfully.

9. Christianity aside, I bet that one's a MLM scam or something similar.
It's got the buzzwords and no hint of the actual job title or requirements.

They actually had a chaplain assigned to the terminal I worked out of (Flat Rock, MI.) and the entire board of drivers was only about 23 guys. (One of which is a DU'r!)

When I started, the chaplain introduced himself to me and said that he was available if there was anything I needed.

I told him I didn't think I would be needing his services as I was an atheist, but thanks anyway.

I should add, he never said another word to me after that. Huh. Imagine!

Other than that, it wasn't really intrusive.

Just kind of odd. Never had a chaplain at a company before or since.
