I'm not trying to call out anyone and I don't want you to go here
and post anything. Seriously. Not that I think anyone would.

Doesn't it seem odd that this guy would issue an apology for this
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x8007394
but NOTHING about his horrible treatment of atheists during the RawStory crap?

And yes, I never let go of anything. Maybe that's the lesson to take from this.

1. "You are ignoring the author of this thread"
I had to log out to read the post.

He lost me a long time ago for asinine comments on religion and atheists.

2. Well let me say my surprise meter isn't even registering a blip.
For most Democrats, atheists are something they wish would just keep quietly voting for them, but otherwise STFU and go away. We see it all around DU - and the only reason we don't see it more is that a whole hell of a lot of liberal atheists happen to be on this board.

3. What was his horrible treatment of atheists?
I have threads started by him blocked, so if he started discussions about atheists I never saw them.

9. Here you go...
Edited on Thu Mar-25-10 08:22 PM by onager
But be warned that if any Net-Cops are watching this group, we will all get accused of "still whining after 4 years."

1. In 2006, Raw Story published an "article" by one Melinda Barton. Title: "The Left's Own Religious Extremists"

Barton's piece suggested that the Democratic party should kick out the atheists. Or, in Barton's charming term, the "whackjobs." That would be us.

The article is STILL up at Raw Story, with an editor's note that it is a reprint. (So much for not getting over it after 4 years, I guess...)

Here's the first paragraph:

The religious nutballs on the extreme right have kept us rational lefties so busy that we've neglected an important although onerous duty -- cleaning the atheist whackjobs out of our own attic, the extreme left. (Of course, extremisms of the religious or atheistic nature are only a small part of the sum total of extremism. Every form of thought has its own whackjobs of varying stripes.)

http://www.rawstory.com/news/2006/The_lefts_own_religious_extremists_0429.html

2. The article caused a furor here on DU. We asked politely for Raw Story to at least apologize to the atheist Dems, and bygones would be bygones.

3. Acting much like the RNC or Faux News, Raw Story dug in its heels and refused to apologize. That La-La Ga-Ga woman from R.S. gave us a few school-marmish, finger-waving lectures on our place in society and the Dem party.

Then the usual chorus of DU faitheist/Lib-Xian blowhards weighed in to suggest that we atheists "get over it," "quit whining," etc.

Other people's memories are probably better than mine, but that's the gist.

11. The postscript to that story
Yes, I did vote McCain/Palin and it was NOT an easy decision to make. That vote is the only vote I've ever cast for a non-Democratic, non-liberal candidate. It doesn't make me a bigot. Nor does it make me a PUMA, since (once again) I'm not a Democrat. I felt then and feel now that, considering the status of the current Democratic and Republican parties and the complete obliteration of an influential American left, we'd be better off with a mixed government. I also have serious concerns about Obama's ability to do what must be done. Unfortunately, we've seen in the last month how Obama's stumbles have been presented as validation of Bush policies.

12. That's the dumbest excuse I've ever heard.
There isn't a single person who voted for McCain/Pain that deserves the time of day, and if anyone follows that link and reads even more of the bullshit spouted there ("I WAS RIGHT!!111!!"), they'll see exactly that.

13. I just thought it was rather ironic
After penning a blog post calling for atheists to be purged from the Democratic Party, she then goes and votes McCain/Palin.

Gee, you insulted a whole group of people and basically wanted them banished from politics, and because others objected and called you on your bullshit, YOU WERE RIGHT!

14. Don't forget that they changed the story
It first came out with a pretty clear "all atheists" and people freaked. Then then reposted it with the "some atheists" form that you see now but no indication of changes being made. For some odd reason, they didn't think people would have made screen shots of it. So the original got out in the blogosphere. RS bitched that people were "changing the story" just to make them look bad. The bloggers called the bullshit and said it was edited. Lather. Rinse. Repeat. RS never owned up to doing what is pretty obvious they did.

Sometimes I feel bad that I still hold this grudge after 4 years. Then I realize I'm still right. And I remember the Jason Leopold "Rove will be indicted in 48 hours" story and laugh.

19. I think this is the fellow once described as...
"The Great Author and his hovering cloud of sycophants."

I don't remember who came up with that, but is was one of you malcontents in here. That description has stuck in my head for years now, and often cheers my shriveled, blackened little whackjob atheist heart.

Many decades from now (we hope), you can die happy, knowing that your words influenced somebody. Atheist Immortality FTW!

Goblinmonger: thanks a lot. I didn't know that part of the story. It figures. "Oh, we insulted all the atheists? Can't have that. Let's re-write and only insult 99 per cent of 'em!"
