What I told my son today

I've seen a lot of discussion about how atheist parents deal with different situations and raising them to be free thinkers etc...

So I thought I'd share this.

I told him that thanksgiving is not just about giving thanks but helping others. I pointed out that we get that lesson from the Native American part of the first thanksgiving mythology not the fundamentalist christian side.

I also told him who I give thanks to on this day. I specifically said I do not give thanks to god because you can't just sit around waiting for god to do things for you. I said I give thanks to, my parents for giving me opportunities like going to college, to him for making me happy, to his mother for marrying me, and to our founding fathers for doing a good job in getting this nation started. I said, these are people who have actually done something that has made my life better so they are the ones to get my thanks.

1. I like it!
Happy Thanksgiving. I'll be having dinner over in the Vegetarian forum, by the way.

2. I also add something with mine
I'm thankful for those many who stood their grounds for not believing in a god and were tortured and/or killed for it. Happy Txgiving to you and your family.

3. I'm thankful I got to live this long and experience what
I was able to experience especially the opportunity to travel. There are many things I don't have anymore, but I am grateful to have experienced and had them at one time.

5. I completely agree
My daughter is already gathering up the toys she does not play with and we're donating them (most are in pristine condition), as well as taking her to the grocery store and we're going to buy (together) a couple of the bags they set up for the food bank. We're also planning on doing the Toys for Tots thing too.

Thank you for posting this!!!
