Don't mind me, I'm invisible.
But pissed.
Invisible and pissed.

Okay, it's lunchtime and I'm listening to Barak Obama at the Press Club luncheon on Npr- great speaker, good man, promising politician-I love listening to him speak.

And then he goes and brings up his god.

WTF?

Are we ever going to hear a speech from a dem that doesn't mention their personal deity?

Why do we have to pander to christians? Let the other side kiss their asses. I don't think we're going to lose religious people because we believe in the Constitution and want to keep government secular. The moderate freethinkers are already with us and the others never will be, IMO.

Personally, as an atheist, I'm insulted when the christian god is mentioned by a civil servant, as are many non-christians.

It is just as deliberately exclusionary coming from a dem as it is when blinky the wonder chimp does it.

:banghead:

3. But Jesus was a liberal!
:hi:

I know that's totally irrelevant to the argument. But it's usually irrelevant in the 9,000 threads to which it is posted every day, too.

I think that phrase is the liberal Xian equivalent of the Fundies' "Gawd-did-it!"

I am sick of being told that that atheists are too uptight, we shouldn't make a big deal out of it, what do we have against and god blah blah blah...
When should we start to worry about it?
When the 2008 reichwing presidential candidate wanna-be starts broadcasting live in mega-churches?

19. A variation on that...
My savior has a first name, it's J-E-S-U-S...
My savior has a second name, it's C-H-R-I-S-T...
I love to praise him every day
And if you ask me why I'll saaaaaay...
Cuz if he doesn't get his way I'll burn in hell on judgment day.

10. Dems are politicians.
Like any other professional of that sort, they are "artists of the possible". They are, unfortunately, a mere reflection of the current state of the society. In the end, and overall in the beginning, the power is to the people. When the people feel that the Vietnam war is a useless abomination, politicians begin to explicitly oppose the Vietnam war. Strictly nothing will happen, strictly nothing will progress, until the people get enough pissed off to rise. Politicians will follow, huffing and puffing, as usual. Meanwhile, let's keep in mind that everything is nothing but a show. Even a set of re-runs.

11. I guess I should have
remembered that, but it caught me off guard. The Press Club luncheons are usually low-key, more intimate opportunities for politicians to speak candidly about the issues. I had really been looking forward to it.
It was a nice wake up for this atheist, regardless of who wins the elections, we'll still be eating in the kitchen.

12. I know the feeling...
That'd be so nice to have someone stand up, a bit like Dean did. We would bargain for a 1/10, wouldn't we?!

13. THANK YOU! I am a native Vermonter.
I voted for Dean every time. I didn't always agree with his positions, (hemp and methadone clinics), but at least he explained his decisions and never pandered to anyone.
You can really respect Dr. Dean, as well as Jim Jeffords, Pat Leahy and of course, the infamous Bernie Sanders. None of those guys ever put keeping their job ahead of their constituents.

sigh...

Hopefully I'll get back there this year. It's too dangerous for an outspoken atheist here in the bible belt.

15. Al Gore stood up for us.
Too lazy to go find the quote, but I sure remember it. During sElection 2000 some reporter asked if it would bother him to have an atheist elected President. (HAH!)

Gore said it wouldn't bother him at all. He went on to say that he had known many atheists who were ethical, trustworthy people. Among other nice things.
