I never thought I'd live to see the day.

When religion, politics and patriotism collide
By George F. Will

WASHINGTON — The state of America's political discourse is such that the president has felt it necessary to declare that unbelievers can be good Americans. In last week's prime-time news conference, he said: "If you choose not to worship, you're equally as patriotic as somebody who does worship."

...

Religion is today banished from the public square? John Kennedy finished his first report to the nation on the Soviet missiles in Cuba with these words: "Thank you and good night." It would be a rash president who today did not conclude a major address by saying, as President Reagan began the custom of doing, something very like "God bless America."

Unbelievers should not cavil about this acknowledgement of majority sensibilities. But Republicans should not seem to require, de facto, what the Constitution forbids, de jure: "No religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust."

1. The Sac Bee carries Will's column?
Edited on Thu May-05-05 08:54 AM by beam me up scottie
It is an interesting column, isn't it?
Not that I don't still think he's a knuckle-dragging, woman-hating, bathroom rug-wearing, simpering little hemorrhoid.

According to the American Religious Identification Survey, Americans who answer "none" when asked to identify their religion numbered 29.4 million in 2001, more than double the 14.3 million in 1990. If unbelievers had their own state — the state of None — its population would be more than twice the size of New England's six states, and None would be the nation's second largest state:

California 34.5 million

None 29.4 million

Texas 21.3 million

2. That's exactly what I thought.
Could old Georgie Porgie be a closet Ath?

We definitely tend to be more liberal than the average, but ultra-conservative atheists are not impossible. Will could have written that column from a very different (pro-Christian) perspective if he had wanted to, I think. Maybe by pointing out that we secular liberals are so bitter and combative, that pResident Dumbshit was "forced" to acknowledge us.

Yeah, I suspect George Fuckface Will (you know that's his middle name, right?) is not a traditional believer.

5. I don't remember
any of his columns being overtly religious, now that I think about it.
Definitely could be a closet case wishing he was brave enough to take a stand.

I never knew his middle name was Fuckface. That explains why he's so bitter. I always thought it was because the other children tortured him.

4. At the very least I think we are starting to see the backlash of the RWs
tryst with fundamentalists. He may very well be a closet atheist, but I think he and many other conservatives know that they need to distance themselves from the Dobsons, Delays and Frists in the party. These hypocritical extremists are putting a strain on their party.

Lets hope the stain rips them to shreds.

6. *snort*
Back away from the toxic zealot........... :hide:

I want to see them turn on frist so that he chews off his own leg trying to get out of the trap.
(kind of like what delay is doing now)

7. Hopefully, Frist will seriously screw up
his party before he is thrown out.

He gives me the creeps.

8. Me too...
Seriously, when I saw the picture of his face being broadcasted on 50 foot television screens in mega-churches, I was terrified.
I can't quite figure out exactly why that image triggered my flight instinct, but it did and still does.

9. I don't hope that at all
Bill Frist as the R's 2008 nominee would give us the White House (barring a total "Diebolding" of the vote), and allow us to show non-political Americans (the 60 to 80% of voters who only closely follow politics for 2 weeks every four years) how deep the Republicans have been in bed with the radical religious fundies.

10. You're an optimist!
After what this country has been witnessing as far as "elections" over the last 8 years or so, I feel it's extremely optimistic to state anything to the effect "would give us the WH"...

12. I try to be an optimist
The reason I think Frist would give us the WH is this: election machines can only displace a small portion of the vote, and that 3 or 4% can be explained away to the average American, even though the statistical discrepancies in '04 make me shudder. A 10 to 15% swing would be much harder to cover up. If Frist is the nominee, I think we have the chance for a landslide which provides enough of a cushion to survive the voting machine cheats. Hell, I have strong Bush supporting conservative friends who hate what Frist did on Justice Sunday. That's a good sign for me in a heavily red state.

11. You give amerikkkans
much more credit than I do.
I think cognitive dissonance has been and will be the rule rather than the exception.

But you don't know how much I hope I'm wrong.

13. As distasteful as I find Will's politics
I think he's a brilliant writer. Always have.

Thanks for the post. I would never had read the column. Sending it out to friends.

3. Note, however,
the pukingly cautious "should not seem to require, de facto."
