Eggs Benedict
Do you think we'd get in trouble if we started calling the pope "Eggs"?

It's not all that great a nickname, but it makes me laugh. :bounce:

2. Well, that's kinder than my pet name for him...
"Hateful Medieval Bunghole In A Gold Prom Dress."

Or words to that effect.

4. No!!!
You'd ruin my favorite breakfast dish! I'd forever think of the wrinkled virgin in the funny hat every time I ordered it.

8. He was this guy!
http://www.benedictarnold.org/

A creepy traitor to the country, but I'd still rather think of him when ordering Eggs Benedict than the Pope!

13. Maybe part of the Arnold family stayed in America...
Edited on Fri Jun-10-05 09:12 PM by onager
...and changed their name to Bu$h. Still carrying on the family tradition.

No wait, that can't be right. For all his greed and calumny, Benedict Arnold was undoubtedly brave and a great general. For several years he was the best general George Washington had.

With just slightly different circumstances, Arnold might have gone down in history as one of the greatest American heroes.

OTOH, he exhibited a lot of Bu$h-like behavior. He was an incurable if usually broke social climber. Especially after he married Peggy Shippen of the extremely hoity-toity Philadelphia Shippens:

At the time, Arnold's wife was considered an innocent in the matter, however, new research leads us to believe that the young woman played an important part in knowing what was going on and aiding her husband's endeavors.

The occupation of Philadelphia during the winter of 1777-1778 was an exciting one for the young woman. Parties, routs, and balls were all aspects of the social scene with numerous British officers and Tory sympathizers. Peggy had made some friends among them...

14. Wow. What a great read.
I had forgotten much of that and never knew some of the details.
Especially interesting for me because I spent most of my childhood in the same area of the Northeast where those battles took place.
We used to cross the bridge or take the ferry to New York all of the time and Fort Ticonderoga is right there on the lake-shore.

Thanks for the link and the history lesson.

15. You're most welcome, as always...
...but it ain't my history lesson. I'm just an AMATEUR history geek. Sort of like Dick Cheney, only I don't have any real armies to play with. ;-)

And thanks for your memories! I grew up not too far from the Revolutionary War battlefield of King's Mountain. That was where our American ancestors cheerfully massacred their prisoners-of-war, even though their own officers tried to stop them. That's not the way we usually learn it in Fourth Grade.

Here's some more Worthless Trivia. The Fundies love that (fictional) idea of George Washington praying before he crossed the Delaware River to attack Trenton, NJ on Xmas Eve 1775.

But according to eyewitnesses...his own officers...what were George's actual stirring words at the time?

"Shift that fat ass over, Henry, or you'll swamp the damn boat!" (He was speaking to his artillery chief Henry Knox, known as "Knox The Ox" because of his humongous size.)

Pop into this R&T thread to see me causing more historical trouble:

I learn so much hanging around this evil lair...
I doubt, however, that your pearls of wisdom will be met with such gratitude on that thread.

If you want to try slumming it with me for a change:

nevermind, nothing to see here folks...
