It puts me in mind of a thought I had a few weeks ago. I was very involved in a tax override campaign in my town (In MA we have to take any property tax hike more than 2.5% to the voters) it looked like we were going to win (we did) and it was going to cost me about $450/year more in taxes. I can afford it but it will be felt. So a little selfish thought came to me.

Why don't I set up a religion based on the LotR mythology? Declare my house the holy shrine of Eru and avoid having to pay taxes.

But unlike a rethug I have a conscious and wouldn't feel right about weaseling out of my community responsibilities.
