:wtf:

Literalism, skepticism, and tolerance

My call for the blue team to cut the red team some slack over opposition to the teaching of evolution in the schools has drawn a storm of denunciation. Much of it is silly village-atheist stuff from people who seem to regard their contempt for theists as among their most precious possessions and who resent any attempt to suggest that the vast majority of humankind, present and past -- including, for example, Socrates and Lincoln -- aren't and weren't believers in obvious nonsense.

3. "Village atheist" reminds me of Vladimir Nabokov.
He once said there were 3 kinds of books that could not be published in America.

1. A book about a village atheist who dies happily in bed surrounded by his loving family and many friends.

2. A book about an interracial couple who marry and live happily ever after.

The third type was the book he wrote: "Lolita."

12. Blush!
Thanks for the nice words, Burt and BMUS.

I'm just about finished reading Howard Zinn's People's History of the United States.

That one will really piss you off.

8. Heh! I think he meant novels...
...but I'd have to go and read the piece again. As I remember, he meant fiction that (1) would not likely ever be published and (2) even if it did, wouldn't sell among the Great Unwashed.

14. And the THEISTS?
"...people who seem to regard their contempt for theists as among their most precious possessions..."

OK, so how many of you have ever heard a myth-believer say "My realtionship with Jeebus Crisco is the most IMPORTANT thing in my life! More important than my wife, more important than my kids, why, it's even MORE important than MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL!"

I've met people who's "contempt" for ATHEISTS seemed to be their most important posession. Right up their with their "personal relationship"...

Didn't Socrates live and die before Christianity was even INVENTED?

What a maroon!
