It's not just the special effects...The show has a really great feel.

1. No
Not to say it isn't one of my favorite shows on tv right now...just that I would say that there are a few others in the top tier, particularly Doctor Who.

Also if we're counting 'recent' sci-fi and not just 'current' since you used the words 'all sci-fi shows' then I'd have to say that Firefly is definately up there in the top tier next to BSG. Many of the techniques that BSG is using as far as camera work etc, for teh effects were pioneered with Firefly.

There are others, but your point is still well made. Compare BSG to any of the recent Star Trek incarnations, or shows like Andromeda, Mutant X, and Crusade and you see the potential for all of them, which is never truly realized as well as BSG realizes it's potential.

As a last note, I'd probably include Stargate SG-1 in the top tier as well personally, though I know others who aren't as fond of the show. They've continued a fairly consistent and developing story line for a decade and done it with humor, great acting and writing, and just good sci-fi. It might not be as dark or purely character driven as BSG is, but it's probably one of the most solid sci-fi series ever. If BSG goes 7 or so years and maintains it's quality throughout, it might just take the crown for best ever, but it isn't there yet.

2. I tried to watch Firefly when it was on Fox, but it didn't grab me.
I know some sci-fi fans that hated Firefly and others that rave about it.....Maybe I will give it another chance when it comes to the sci-fi channel.

4. Give it another chance
Fox screwed the series by airing it out of order, and moving the time slot around...

Watch it starting next week on Sci-Fi and you'll miss it 13 weeks later when it's gone.

3. If you were only talking about the mini series,
I might have agreed with you.

Battlestar Galactica's first season and the second season premier haven't impressed me like the miniseries. It's having the same problems much of the sci-fi genre deals with.

The only sci-fi shows that made all other look amateurish would be Red Dwarf or Odyssey 5. The latter was hatted by critics and most sci-fi fans.

5. I feel the opposite on Galactica
I didn't like the miniseries all that much... but, thought the series got better with each passing week until the fantastic last few episodes.

6. Not as such
I wouldn't say that it makes ALL the others 2nd rate... However, I do share your enthusiasm for the quality of the show. It is one of the better ones.
