1. "The Best of Both Worlds", but...
...I continue to have a quibble over the way they resolved that story. As I noted in your other thread, HypnoToad, it made no sense at all to me that a simple forced regeneration cycle could cause self-destruction. That's a design flaw that makes Microsoft Windows look like software perfection.

In my opinion, here's how I would've written end of the 2nd part of that episode:

- Data struggles to get access to Picard's connection to the collective
- Meanwhile, on the bridge and lacking any other option, Riker prepares the order to ram and detonate the Enterprise warp core
- Picard manages to get his 'sleep' command across to Data, and it's done, putting the Borg temporarily into a regen cycle (which will NOT last more than a minute or two at most)
- Riker's casting about for a longer-term solution when Geordi reports that weapons are back online, as is the deflector weapon, although it won't last long and certainly still won't punch through the Borg shields
- Data relays a command through the regen loop subroutines, that the shield generators are also in need of regeneration, taking them offline just long enough for a diagnostic to run -- say 10 seconds
- Riker orders the deflector weapon fired, thereby destroying the Borg vessel

See? Much more satisfying. And they could even have said something at the very end like, "You know, that trick will only work the one time. If they come back -- no, strike that, 'when they come back' -- we're going to have a real mess on our hands."

Then again, I make my living, such as it is, doing this sort of thing...

3. "Q Who"

Almost went with Best of Both Worlds but ended up voting Q-Who just because I remember how badd ass the Borg were when they were first introduced (nothing like the watered down versions on Voyager :P).

That espisode built on suspense, with Q throwing the Enterprise a few thousand light years, and Guinan's(sp?) advice to Picard being pretty much get the hell out of dodge now. But of course Picard had to have a look around hehe.

Then they find the Borg, and pretty much get their asses delivered to them to the point where Picard actually asks Q for help and admit there are some things in the galaxy we are not ready for.

4. Close call between Q-Who and the Best of Both Worlds
I don't care much for the Borg, other than Seven of Nine, because they remind me too much of Republicans.

5. One vote for "I, Borg."
It isn't the grand adventure, or perhaps even as good an episode, as "Best of Both Worlds." It did one thing, though, that represents Trek at its best. After years of scaring the willies out of us, repeatedly, with Borg-as-bogeymen, "I, Borg" made us look the beast in the eye and discover that the hate was insupportable--at least for a little while. It reminds me of the Hardy poem, "The Man He Killed."

9. It's my favorite one...
I really like moral dilemma type episodes and this one was it. This was a first insight into the collective and the realization they were more than automatons was a reality that had to be forced upon them. People had to toss out everything they thought they knew about the borg.

I wish they had delved more deeply into the chaos that resulted from what happened to Hugh. It's surprising he was never mentioned at all on Voyager.

6. Close call between Q Who & Best of Both Worlds
I like the first one because it first introduced us to The Borg, one of the best Trek villains. I like BoBW as well because I thought it was fantastic that the writers waited a season & a half to bring the Borg back, and the story was great. I remember because I still lived at home when it was on the first time. My brother, who also loved Next Generation, had to miss the airing of the episode... so, I left a note on his door afterwards that was something like "Picard is one of the Borg & Riker is commanding the Enterprise!!!"

8. Gotta say "Q Who"
BOBW is great and a fab cliffhanger, but the resolution is a bit iffy and apart from "He's gone, they know his methods, make up something new" there's little to be learned. Still a great moral, but "Q Who" is more poignant with its themes...

"Q Who" has a bit more depth to it than just 'alien invasion and, btw, we're going to convert your captain and call your solar system Sector 001 solely because it sounds nice despite breaking Borg and Federation continuity.' :D
