What's the deal with "World at the End of Time", by Pohl

It seemed to me that it ended on an utter cliff-hanger, and yet he's never written any continuation of the story, at least that I can find.

Does anybody out there know what the heck happened?

2. Is that a Gateway book?

I read the first three books of that series and wondered what in the hell was the big deal about it to make it award winning. Nice worldbuilding, but blah!
