Eoin Colfer to write sixth Hitchhiker's Guide book
(snip)
Colfer, who has been a fan of Hitchhiker since his schooldays, said being given the opportunity to continue the series was "like suddenly being offered the superpower of your choice". "For years I have been finishing this incredible story in my head and now I have the opportunity to do it in the real world," he added. "It is a gift from the gods. So, thank you Thor and Odin."

My comment: Always risky IMHO for a new author to take up another author's creation, even authors who's original work I enjoy usually don't quite do it for me when they take over a story I liked from another author, for example the Foundation stories written by Bear and others.

1. Yikes! Good luck with that one, Eoin!
I have to say that, after Mostly Harmless and my concurrent that none of the main characters are really likable (that is, I wouldn't actually want to know or have to interact personally with any of them) I'm not sure that I'd have the fortitude for another venture into that universe.

Though, curiously, I really do like the series, in spite of all that...

2. What, you wouldn't want to go drinking with Ford Prefect?
Spend a night at Milliway's?

To paraphrase: "The people! The food! The things!" "Some of the things ARE people."

Although I agree that it's tricky to take up another author's work. I tend to stay away from that.
