Stargate Universe reviews at AICN
Staring at "Stargate SGU," one senses the folks at Syfy approached the guys who made “Stargate Atlantis” with this pitch: “‘Battlestar Galactica’ is easily the least crappy thing on the channel, but Ron Moore is one pricey writer-producer. You think you could maybe make something like that ‘Galactica’ show? The critics sure do seem to like it a lot better than your Stargate series!”

... While there’s promise in the premise, the “Stargate” writers don’t demonstrate any more faculty for crafting thought-provoking drama or complex characters than they did on their old “Stargate” shows.

USA Today, New York Time, Washington Post, and others chime in.

2. SGU: the bastard lovechild of Battlestar Galactica and Lost.
I watched the two hour premiere. I'll give it this much, it's grittier and in some ways more true to life (at least so far) than some of the previous Stargate material. Although I can't say that too confidently, because Stargate SG-1 had a good premiere and an even better first regular episode, but also had some really bad episodes right out of the gate.

The saving grace of SGU, so far, is that they're avoiding some of the pitfalls they've had in the past--an entirely sanitized universe where everybody neatly stacks up as either heroes or villains. They've used some tropes, and had some REAAAALY big plot holes, but they've provided a bit more promise than previous efforts.

4. They stumbled out of the... ahem... gate, but the last two were good.
Especially the time-slip ep with the found kino.

It takes time for any show to find it's groove. Look at the first 10-15 eps of Star Trek TNG.
