Do I have to use TIVO through my cable company or can I just buy

one?

I am disgusted with my cable/internet service. Now it is $167.00 per month for both and the only premium channel I have on TV is HBO.

So I am thinking about going back to the dish if I can get a TIVO thingy to work by itself. I just realized that it is just a computer.

Or if anyone has a good deal and how did you get it?

1. That price is insane. I have a friend that has a stand alone

TiVO box and only basic channels through DirecTV. I don't think he pays for his TiVO extra on his bill. I'll ask him and find out the details.

Tivo.com has free, basic Tivos - as long as you subscribe to the service. (about $10 per month, but less if you purchase months in bulk).

Tivo has nothing to do with your cable company, except that it uses your cable company's listings to remember what shows to record. However, Tivo doesn't work with Dish Network, due to Tivo's Intellectual Property lawsuit against Dish Network. http://www.tivo.com/tivodishinfo.asp

Some cable companies (like Comcast) have DVRs for 9.99 extra per month.
