Is this sound a fisher cat? Audio recording here -- help me identify!
Last night this god-awful sound started up in the woods (I live in Maine). It scared the crap outta me and it was LOUD. I suspected it was a fisher cat but couldn't find any online recordings of the animal until I came across a site posted by someone who'd recorded a mystery-animal sound and he didn't know what it was. This is exactly what I heard last night.

Is this a fisher cat? Help me identify it!

1. from Wikipedia
from Wikipedia

It's a Marten
Fishers are also known for one of their calls, which is often said to sound like a child screaming, and can be mistaken for someone in dire need of help. Some of the fisher make very odd sounds like a cat meow but screaming.

2. I think it's the same thing
Wikipedia says that a fisher is also known as a North American marten. Whatever, it's a very creepy sound. And they're nasty!

3. My dogs just went NUTS!!!
I've heard fisher cats up here and that's part of the sound but they do also sound like babies or cats crying. I'm just not sure.

6. I believe it sounds more like a red fox...
Red fox pass through my yard in upstate NY all of the time and the calls are quite erie and alarming....I didn't know what it was either until I caught a glimpse of them and found this website with the fox sounds. The most common one ...and the one that sounds a lot like the one you have, is the "fox calling out" the second one down in the list. Take a listen and see what you think.
