What's your favorite camping food?
Do you carry your own or purchase something like Mountain House freeze dried foods when you take a trip into the woods (mountains, desert, whatever)?

I personally like MRE's. I lived off them for a while after hurricane Ivan and had a few cases left over after I rejoined society. I often took them camping and to work during long stakeouts.

So, what do you like?

1. I'm usually to lazy to heat things up so
I often just pack Nature Valley granola bars, jerky, peanuts and raisins, maybe an apple or two.

But I am getting better and just recently bought a backcountry stove. My motivation was mainly to allow me to have some hot tea at night or in the morning :)

But I have used recently a couple of meals from here: http://www.maryjanesoutpost.org/

I've tried the oatmeal and the chili (as much as the idea of vegan chili seemed ... well just wrong I still tried it) and liked both, even the chili! ;) I still eat meat but I've cut down a lot and eat vegan when I get the can make that choice. Of course these are more expensive so I still generally just using them for one meal a day out on the trail and they do offer recipes and bulk purchase of ingredients which if you do a lot of hiking could likely bring the price down considerably. I haven't tried that yet perhaps next year when I'll be more able to plan ahead and get out into the outdoors than this year.

2. Oatmeal or Cream of Wheat for breakfast
We make one-pot backpacking meals:

Dehydrate spaghetti sauce, then rehydrate it and put it over pasta. Add rehydrated beans or tuna.

Macaroni and cheese and beans.

Vigo rice and beans mix--takes a lot of time and gas. I don't like Zatarian's rice and beans--the smoked taste is too much.

Dehydrate canned corn, peas, or carrots and add it to any of the above.

My favorite easy trail lunch is pretzels, apples, and string cheese. Second is peanut butter on a pita plus raisins or gorp. Third is tuna on a pita with mayo and mustard.

3. Gin Martini

Bombay Sapphire gin and vermouth, carried afield in a thermos, and served straight-up with olives around a camp fire.

Hey, some things nourish the body, while other things take care of the soul......

4. I like your style Paladin
I'm not much of a drinker anymore, but a flask of something tasty (usually good rum or tequila) remains a tradition with me and one of my hiking mates. Nourishment for the soul indeed...

6. Black Bear Cream of Potato soup.
It's dry, cheap, makes a ton if you want, and you can add anything to it.

8. I was in the Marine Corps right when they made the switch.
We ate c rats for the first two years I was in, the remaining two it was always MRE's. I enjoyed the can that had the chocolate & crackers in it. The rest of the stuff no so much.
As far as camping food I usually take a frozen steak the first night, then it is mountain house pouches.
