JOHN KERRY UNCUT (Interview in Details Magazine)

snip>
Q: What goes through your mind when you hear the word windsurfing?
A: Misunderstood. That’s one word that comes to mind. Most of the people who do it are guys who can’t afford the yachts that the Republicans run around in. It’s part of what the Republicans have done, to transform a serious, honorable business of politics into a kind of game of mockery, and I think it’s sad for America. And I challenge anyone who makes fun of windsurfing to come out and do it with me and see how long they last.
Q: So you really are into this wellness thing. Do you have a food indulgence?
A: Oh, god. Chocolate-chip cookies. I think I’m the illegitimate son of the Cookie Monster.

Q: Careful. The other side will say you’re implying something about a Sesame Street character.
A: Let’s just say I’m related to the Cookie Monster. We don’t want to give them something else to distort.

My God who is the photographer, the picture IMO is horrible.

1. That's a great interview.
JK's answer about windsurfing gave me a chuckle and put a very incongruous image in my head: Rush Limbaugh attempting to windsurf. I'd pay to see that.

I was surprised to hear that Kerry actually recites poetry. I've done that for years to the annoyance of my family and friends. Okay, fess up: anyone else here do that? Anyone else here run around the house reciting Shakespeare or Byron? You know who you are.

2. That's a nice, cat-nip filled interview. : )

I agree with you though Fedup, the photo is HORRIBLE! I think that was an attempt at "art" gone terribly wrong.

I thought this was interesting, the interviewer says, "I canvassed friends, and what I heard most was “Please tell me he’s not going to run again.”" Shortly after that, the interviewer says that most of his friends don't identify themselves as Democrats, but rather as "Independents". Maybe instead, he should have asked, you know, actual DEMOCRATS.

3. It's disconcerting to see Kerry looking up and photographed at this angle.
This is a strange photograph. I think they were trying for something artsy, but it just didn't work.

Because he's tall, most photos show Kerry looking down. This photo shows him looking up, which is a position of submission instead of dominance. A high angle shot like this usually makes the subject look powerful, but because he's looking up, the photograph almost gives him the look of a little kid looking up to a parental figure or stargazing. It just doesn't fit the personality, so it's jarring. This type of shot would be more appropriate for Shrub (ie: consulting his higher authority before invading Iraq). The photo would have been good if they had his eye level looking straight across as if he were watching something in contemplation.

4. OMG, that picture!
The last time I saw anything like it, it was the darkened image of OJ Simpson on the cover of, what was it, Time magazine? Yuck. I mean, really--what were they thinking???

Son of the cookie monster--funny and heartwarming!

5. Great interview - and yeah dreadfull picture
This is how a Class act talks about others - McAuliffe and Edwards could take a lesson.

Q: Tell me this: Why do people keep hiring your 2004 campaign adviser Bob Shrum when he’s repeatedly associated with failed runs for the White House?
A: I think Bob Shrum’s been treated very unfairly. Because I think he’s an amazingly talented, capable person, and has a huge heart, and cares about the political process, and worked his tail off for everybody he’s ever worked for. And you know, he wasn’t the only person making decisions in that effort. And in the end, it’s my responsibility. Look, we won the nomination, and we came damn close to winning, and people better go back and check the history books as to how hard it is to beat a sitting president in a time of war. The mood has changed like night and day from when I was running in ’04 to where we are now. If it had been two months later, three months later, you’d have had a very different mood. You know, I think the people who worked for me in that campaign worked their hearts out, and none of them deserve to be kicked around the way some people like to kick people around in this city. I just think it’s inappropriate. It’s an unfortunate ugliness that I hope we can move on from. "

6. Thanks for finding that interview. JK, seemed to be relaxed and very forthcoming

with answers.

Yes, the picture was not great,I have seen worse though.
The one thing that did seem out of place was the comment about writing poetry. Ah, I don't think that would go over with the average TV viewer. Poetry, unfortunately, is IMO, a dying art form. Personally, I agree with him on the quality of TV, but I don't think poetry instead of TV campaign would garner enthusiastic support among the American public. JMHO.

7. Actually, I liked the poetry idea
John Kerry comes from a world that is slowly dying. A world where you do creative things because that's what it means to be alive. Now, people rely on electronics for entertainment, and don't often create anymore, like writing stories or poetry or painting. This is who JK is. And I've read it in other places that he writes poetry for fun (like limericks). People are attracted to genuineness and this is him. With proper "branding", poets could become cool again.

I'm with you on the TV. It is a waste of time. I'm at the point where all I mostly watch is news and C-SPAN. Have I become such a big geek?

8. I did too
My son and daughter write poetry all the time. My son who is a musician was always into writing and art, now he puts his poetry to music. He has even gone to a few clubs in N.Y. where they stand up and read their poetry, and I don't think if you saw him would think of him as a geek.;-) None of my kids are big TV watchers, except for sports for my oldest.

11. On the other hand,
his talking about poetry is exactly why I love him - because he is honest and says what is true, not what he thinks someone else wants to hear.

I really think that quality could be turned to his advantage if it was presented to the public in the right way - not ignored as if it were embarrassing. He should turn that boat right into all the crap about windsurfing and poetry and his classical guitar playing.

Not that I know jacksquat about political messaging. Just my humble two cents.

12. OK, now I have to watch that guitar video again.
And I can't find it on C-Span!
It's the one where he visits the guitar store.
Anyone have a link?

13. there is nothing embarrassing about any of the things he loves
the only thing is that the Republicans get out the negative spin on it with as Kerry says, mockery.

but if their own candidate did things like this they would talk about it in a positive way. you know a lot of Bush supporters would tell me he is smart because he went to ivy league schools.

they also said Kerry only went to Vietnam because he didn't get into grad school.

it's the stupid Democrats who turn into little pissant weak asses which i probably hate the most though. rather than calling out the wingers on their spin or speaking positively about something which is good. they get scared and talk about how we need someone who is "regular" or some other shit.

10. pic sucks, looks like he was trying to do some stupid effects
we all know JK looks best when not posing and just doing whatever he is.

but the interview totally makes up for it. he really gets it about Republicans and mockery. and i always said the sports Kerry does are ones that mostly young people who don't have much money often do.

it's golf which is more costly especially with club fees that some do. and of course the yachts and all those other things that wealthy types do.

i want JK to say this on TV and really get the message out of what Republicans do and what windsurfing is really about.

in the beach area i always see guys in uniforms who are on a break . are these soldiers elitists ? when i heard JK talk about how he would spend his free time when he was stationed in California doing things like surfiing i thought of these guys.

and I LOVE chocolate chip cookies also. it's probably one of my favorites. if i have a bunch i can't stop eating them. but unlike JK i have to be careful since i would gain weight easily from them.
