BG editorial about the media buzz about Hillary and Obama

GLOBE EDITORIAL
Ready, set...

January 17, 2007

BARACK OBAMA made no history yesterday. Other African-Americans have run for president -- Jesse Jackson in 1984 and 1988; Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm in 1972. And if Hillary Clinton runs, she will be on a trail blazed by other women -- Chisholm, and Senator Margaret Chase Smith in 1964.

Yet magazine covers and an endless parade of commentators are obsessed with identity politics. "Is America Ready?" blares the Newsweek headline.

Perhaps the reason for this level of attention is that Obama and Clinton seem better positioned to win the presidency than any of these predecessors. Still, commentary on the race or gender of a candidate is not what will interest most voters in the end.

...

Is America ready? Surely, the nation is ready for a leader who knows that America's place in a shrinking world is pre eminent but not all-powerful, who understands that unilateralism is bankrupt, who would protect Americans' rights rather than maximizing his own, who demands integrity, who will move toward energy independence without stripping the land of its natural treasure, who believes in -- and can deliver -- economic opportunity for all.

This year and next, voters across America can expect a watershed campaign likely to be among the most dramatic in recent times. The great majority will rightly focus, we believe, not on whether they are "ready" to support a black candidate, or a woman candidate, but on which of the candidates has a vision of where the nation should be going, and the strength to lead in that direction.

Given the description the Globe gives here, I certainly hope that they realize that here, in MA, we have probably the one who can do this the best: Senator Kerry.

So, I will finish the Globe editorial for them : run, John, run!!!

1. You are so right!!! They're saying John Kerry should run.
As if the others are really focussed on what the BG was covering.

But the information war is where this thing will be won or lost.

I'm still reading that global counterinsurgency article, and how insurgents are able to keep winning against America in Iraq by using information and the media. For example, they don't blow up Hummers for strategic or military reasons, they do it for informational reasons. Basically, Bush who defeated Kerry largely on media manipulation is getting his ass kicked by an insurgency that has deftly manipulated information and the media. In this, there is a lesson -- that perception does indeed win or lose wars, and campaigns, too. So when/if Kerry goes into the race, there MUST be a powerful narrative along with it that the media will find believeable and parrot it. It's not enough that the narrative be true, it must be PERCEIVED to be true.

This will depend on Kerry looking at the caricature of himself that has already been created and see if there is a piece of that, that he can use and expand on. And mold it into his vision which is largely a global one. Energy Independence and securing the world from terror with the 75/25 global counterinsurgency techniques. He is a man of ideas, not personality.

2. I think it fits Kerry perfectly - but wonder if they might be
suggesting Gore. It might fit for him too. (but more from post 2002 - now, then his Senate or VP time.)

3. Agree.
The media buzz is general is celebrity, but the public wants a seasoned candidate. This is not the time for more spin.

4. One thing that the media MIGHT be able to be persuaded of
is the fact the Iraq Study Group was really an endorsement of Kerry's ideas on how to deal with Iraq -- both the diplomatic piece from his campaign and the concept of setting a target date to tell the Iraqis that the troops will leave. Although the ISG wouldn't use a DATE CERTAIN, they did put in a goal of the first quarter of '08.

This shows that his ideas have bipartisan support and are well respected by serious people. Most media outlets missed this completely, but some figured it out (Sully did, for example).

7. I agree, the inclusion of his ideas in this report validate them and show they respect
him and take him seriously. I was thrilled when I heard he was asked to appear and was included in the report.

8. That's why I think we need to compile EVERY statement by conservative pundits
that refers to Kerry being right. Broadcast and print.

9. Good idea.
Even Scarsboro(sp) has quoted Kerry, and I remember William Crystal has said kerry was right at least once. I will check later and see if I find anything.
