Kerry hopes to decide on presidential bid by month's end

WASHINGTON --Sen. John Kerry hopes to decide by the end of the month whether he'll run for president again in 2008.

Sign up for: Globe Headlines e-mail | Breaking News Alerts "I'm going to make a decision," Kerry, D-Mass., said during a brief interview with The Associated Press outside the Senate chamber on Thursday. "I'm not going to drag it out. But I need to finish the process, which I will."

Kerry's goal is to announce his campaign plans by the end of the month, a Kerry spokesman said Thursday.

However, asked if he had a firm timetable for making up his mind on a second White House bid, Kerry would only say: "Nope."

Kerry has recently hired several politically experienced aides for his Senate office and political action committee.

In a time when Democratic hopes for capturing the White House are high, Bay State lawmakers are anxious for Kerry to make up his mind so they can support someone else if he declines to run. Some have already been asked to back potential Kerry rivals.

The Democratic field has grown in recent weeks. Illinois Sen. Barack Obama recently joined the pack. New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is expected to enter the race within days. Obama and Clinton are considered the two Democratic heavyweights.
