:banghead:

I concur with many of the commenters - how the hell is Congress going to end a war if you can't even get 60 Senators to say that escalating the war's a bad idea?

1. So, ah, let me get this straight

The Republicans are going to filibuster the first measure to go before the US Senate that seeks to curb the President's power to escalate the war in Iraq. This is the same measure that an overwhelming majority of the US public is in favor of and supports. Furthermore, the Republicans are going to force a vote that clearly delineates who is in favor of continuing the war as is versus those who seek a change in the direction of the war. The Republicans are going to fight for the label of being supporters of Bush's policies in Iraq and demand that the Democrats go on the record as opposed.

Ah, forgive me, but in what universe is this a bad idea for the Democrats? The divisions between the parties will be crystal clear. The Republicans will retain complete ownership of the war and the problems associated with the war, go on the record as being opposed to change and will mark the Democrats as the party of change.

Ah, yeah, that's right. The Republicans are mad because they want to have 2 more votes on Repub resolutions that express support for the troops and one that promises not to cut funding. Since the 'pubbies can't get these resolutions on the calendar, they are going to filibuster the resolution about disapproving the surge. The other 2 resolutions will not be noted in the press. The Republicans are about to commit political suicide in the US Senate. I'm getting some popcorn for this one.

2. Actually, this is a good thing. I don't like that Warner resolution
much, and am glad Dems don't have to log a vote on it. Yes, it was against the surge, but there were poison pills injected in it, too, so good riddance that it won't be voted on.

The Republicans sure like the filibuster, don't they? A real turn around from their attitude towards it starting in '05.

Um, here's our slogan: "Republicans still in favor of Bush's war and too afraid to debate it with the Democrats." It's a win-win all the way around.

3. I agree beachmom
The debate about the debate could be the most interesting thing next week. Smart Democrats will take to the floor and ask why the Republicans are so afraid of talking about Iraq.

5. I agree, too
I am just disgusted at Warner. Just when you think he's started to get it, he falls back into the republican line.

I just hope the Dems play it right and use it as putting the republican party - as a party - on record for wanting to continue and escalate the Iraq Debacle.
