Now what's this - McAuliffe wouldn't fight the Swiftliars??
Anybody heard this story before? I haven't, or am I reading it wrong. Kerry and McAuliffe screaming about the DNC spending money on fighting Swiftliars?? Now I *am* getting curious about the kind of help JK got from the Clintons and DNC. Did he hire Lockhart, etc, because the DNC wouldn't support him otherwise??? What really happened in 2004.

1. Kerry's version concerning the 04 campaign is still unknown.

I do not think that anybody close to him has ever written anything (when I mean close, I am not talking about all those strategists that arrived AFTER he had clinched the nomination, but people that we could really trust to tell the story as it was).

I have read multiple accounts and I do not trust any at this point. They all tell the same story: how strategist X (insert the name of your choice) tells Kerry to do something that would have won him the election.

What I remember, however, around Sept 04, were accounts of the SwiftBoats where Kerry wanted to answer, but was told not to do so (just like for the joke).

2. None of us have the versions we need, but.....
I remember the two times the Swifties trying it earlier, to no interest, so the campaign thought best to wait a short amount of time. That means Mary Beth, angering JK by not wanting to defend, giving it credence, as I heard it. A shouting match. After what has been now determined to be a $22 million effort, 24/7 free media giving 50/50 parity of could be true, with White House lawyer Ginsburg as lead effort (before going fulltime-right to Hardball), I do wonder why the DNC, electeds, didn't try harder to defend once Kerry took hold of it.

Not until the debates did DC perk up and think we may have a chance, but still not enough to really help.

The campaign really thought they got the Swiftie truth out, but rumors and lies never seem to die. Anyway, that's the version I heard.

3. They scheduled a press conference early Aug
They had a number of retired military, Kerry supporters, ready to go on the day the book presser was scheduled. They cancelled, which is also a reason they decided this was going to go the way of the earlier attacks. So there is also that aspect.

I've never heard McAuliffe wouldn't spend money before today, regardless of when it was asked for.

4. I don't know why
but this rings an odd bell in my head and even if it doesn't ring a bell, it makes sense.
