OT: The Equal Rights Amendment is back
http://alternet.org/blogs/peek/49860

Yesterday, House and Senate Democrats reintroduced the measure … and vowed to bring it to a vote in both chambers by the end of the session.

…"Elections have consequences, and isn't it true those consequences are good right now?" Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) asked a mostly female crowd yesterday at a news conference, as the audience cheered. "We are turning this country around, bit by bit, to put it in a more progressive direction."

, who chairs the Judiciary subcommittee on the Constitution, civil rights, and civil liberties, said the bill will receive its first hearing in more than two decades and "is going to be one of the items at the top of the agenda."

... Wisteria, now what was that you were saying in another thread yesterday?

1. Yes, here is the bill.
They offered it last year too, but Frist never scheduled it. Hopefully, Reid will do better.

2. I like that Kerry is first on the list of co-sponsors.
There was probably some competition over who got to be sponsor on this.

5. I asked about this in GD and got essentially ignored
This amendment was before my time, and I never got a good explanation from history textbooks about it (when they mentioned it at all). I realize it's a good thing, but what exactly does it do? What does it change for women?

6. Check google news
All you need to see is the wailing and gnashing of teeth on the right wing sites, to know that it means something.

From Ms. Magazine:

http://www.msmagazine.com/news/uswirestory.asp?ID=10224

The Women's Equality Amendment, which has the same exact wording as the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) that was first introduced in 1923 and has been under consideration several times, would add the following sentence to the US Constitution: "Equality of Rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any state on account of sex."

"The amendment, as you can see, is simple. This amendment is not about partisan politics. It is about fairness and equality," Rep. Maloney said yesterday. "Equality is not a slogan, or a fad. It is a fundamental right."

House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties Chair Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) joined Rep. Maloney at the press conference, pledging to hold hearings on the ERA. "A constitutional amendment is necessary to ensure that the status of women is not subject to changes in politics, but is a protected right of basic equality. The ERA would proclaim gender equality as a fundamental principle for our laws, and it is long overdue," Rep. Nadler said in a statement.

7. Holy crap!
:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

Now can they find 67 votes to pass this thing?

I went to a Waldenbooks near me and they were sold out of TMOE. Guess I'll have to pick it up the next time I'm in Champaign. Strange how no one likes JK yet his book is a #1 bestseller...
