From an article in a TX publication.

Veterans Hospital Issue Bringing John Kerry to Valley Saturday

Updated: Feb 21, 2008 11:35 AM

U.S. Senator John Kerry is expected to speak at the University of Texas at Brownsville - Texas Southmost College on Saturday to discuss the need for a veterans hospital for the Valley.

Organizers of the event said veterans, their families and friends are encouraged to attend the meeting.

Veterans groups are advocating the construction of a fully-funded veterans hospital in the Rio Grande Valley.

They say the Valley has a high number of veterans who must travel to San Antonio or other distant locations to receive many forms of healthcare.

6. I honestly don't know
I haven't seen anything on this. That news tends to come out of the Obama campaign, since it's a case of the campaign telling their prominent surrogates where to appear for maximum benefit.

My apologies. I will try and find out.

Throughout Texas Saturday, supporters like Oathout opened their homes in a grassroots effort to get voters to head to the polls for early voting and remind them to vote in the March 4 primaries.

It was a message Senator John Kerry repeated at a rally in Galveston.

“Texas has the opportunity to decide the nomination,” Kerry told the crowd.

Kerry was the second major Democratic Senator to make the trip out to the Lone Star State to stump for Obama.

Edit: Video at link (a small clip, but I'll take it)!

7. i think Ohio and Pennsylvania would be good places
for Kerry to campaign. Teresa especially would help in those areas.

but i do remember that very good event Kerry had in Texas just after the 2004 elections. he had a huge turnout.

11. oh, thanks! this article is fantastic!
This is real reporting. Interesting how the local papers these days seem to be doing a better job reporting such events than the national MSM. There was about as full an account of JK's helicopter landing in this single article in this small site than in the Globe (which limited its coverage to about 1/4 a column, buried in the middle of the paper. . )

I loved reading about the SRO crowd and the multiple standing ovations "for his oratory and persuasive reasoning" (well, damn straight-- so nice to see that recognized for a change . . ), Bobby Barrera's warm and inspiring introduction, the photos. It was a great account of the real, full JK at full throttle. "Kerry thundered", and "teased", was "relaxed, yet energetic".

What a nice way to start the day.

13. Here's another local article - good also

"But Kerry’s remarks moved far beyond race, discussing also the frequent criticism of Obama as inexperienced. Kerry detailed Obama’s career and his own interactions with the Illinois senator on the U.S. Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee, which Kerry has served on for 24 years.

“I’ve watched him, the questions he asks,” Kerry said. “Barack comes to this job with instinct.”
<snip>

here's a great quote on why Kerry's endorsement matters:
"“It’s very difficult to unseat an incumbent,” said Lucio, who supported Kerry in 2004. “Someone who has given up their whole life to public service like John Kerry supporting Obama shows what he sees in him — his potential and what he can do for our country, to unify congress and give people faith in government again.”

I know this wastes one of the 4 paragraphs allowed - but I love the humor, though it is bittersweet as he has had that same sense of humor forever - but nice to see it mentioned>
"Kerry’s quick sense of humor - joking about the previous day’s emergency helicopter landing in Afghanistan and his plan with fellow senators to alternately use snowballs to combat the Taliban or talk them to death with a longwinded speech — as well as his warm enthusiasm about Obama was a departure from his constricted persona during his own bid for president in 2004."

14. From the same source,
the Chelsea event mentioned.

Seems less inspiring than the JK one, and Chelsea seems to have inherited her parents' integrity. She did campaign for JK and his alternative energy/environmental plank was mentioned in EVERY speech - including that it would produce good jobs.

"I am proud thatmy mother was the first person to discuss the creation of green-collar jobs, “ Chelsea said in response to mentions of economic woes. “She’s going to create thousands of jobs, and those are jobs that can’t be outsourced.”

15. His quotes about inexperience should be used for a GDP thread. It will HELP those
less-acquainted with Obama's record and what points matter for the overall debate. Especially since we'll be hearing it even more from McCain and GOPs soon.

16. Your right about this - both these TX papers do a nice job here
I love the title of the Brownsville one - only someone perceived to have integrity himself can vouch for the character of another. This title may be the biggest compliment to both men. I hope the CSPAN coverage (mentioned on another post) of Kerry is from an appearance as good as these seem to have been. I love that in part he had some vets and soldiers' families there. This is a case where Kerry telling them Obama will care for them means something.
