Guys, I am beginning to be scared in my own state.

The ugliness is getting closer to home. This is only one town over from me:

A DailyKos diarist apparently started a campaign to get advertisers to not advertise in the paper. The editor of the paper called it "liberal blogger thuggery". I mean WTF??

Here is the article:

http://www.ajc.com/services/content/metro/northfulton/stories/2008/05/21/obama_0522.html?cxtype=rss&cxsvc=7&cxcat=13

Less known is that a KKK leader based in Georgia has predicted that Obama will be killed, saying it will happen in the South.

I mean, has the state of Georgia gone mad? It is incomprehensible to me because Atlanta metro is quite cosmopolitan with very diverse neighborhoods. Everyone gets along. And that is true where these incidents are happening. So are people just being nice while secretly harboring hate behind closed doors?

1. More details:
I will remove the http link. The article itself is fine (scary, but fine); it's the picture on the cover which was remarkably boneheaded:

beaconcast.com/articles/20080521_1

And the history of Forsyth County & the KKK parade dispute which went all the way to the Supreme Court. I vaguely remember this case; I just didn't know it was right near me (the county is a 7 minute drive from my house):

2. If it's any solace to you, there is a higher ratio of white supremacists in southern Ohio than any
other state, including Georgia. There was a white supremacy group arrested a few blocks from me where I lived in Southern California in the early 90s. It's everywhere - and the stereotype of it being a southern thing is just that - a stereotype.

3. Georgia is in the top 4, unfortunately. Well, according to the RW rag.
Hilarious, the hierarchy here. A right wing rag prints a story about white supremacists & then themselves print a inappropriate picture with the article (which they took down from their website). Liberals jump on it and are called thugs by the RW rag. Thing is, the reporter had to go hang out with the white nationalists to get the story. But this makes them look pretty bad.

4. It's the acceptance of the larger society
The unwillingness of the people to actively shut it down. The community should be screaming for a public apology, not bloggers. Just like that church in South Carolina with the "Obama, Osama, hmm, are they brothers?" sign. That town should have responded, I emailed the county Dem Party to suggest they organize a group and go to church. I got a response, "yeah we should", but I don't think anybody did. That's the difference. Sure these problems happen out here, but we don't give it a wink and a nod when it does.

5. Thank you for that blm.
That Southern stereotype gets old. Real old. (Along with other Southern stereotypes which I've seen on DU, but I digress.) Anyway, of course we still have issues with race here, but like you said, we aren't unique in that.
Having said that, in regards to Beachmom's OP, this behavior is indeed frightening (no matter where it happens) and unfathomable in the year 2008. What the hell is wrong with people?

6. And an Obama mural in Atlanta gets defaced with a swastika:

Watch the video here

Maybe Georgia actually is in play for the G.E. for all of this hate to come out of the woodwork. I really like the artist who expressed no ill will toward the vandals.
