I went to Austin, TX this past long weekend for Netroots Nation, which was a great time. This diary, actually captured one of the activities I was involved in -- registering voters in Austin:

(Pic #2)

Tay Tay was also there at the convention, and we helped out putting together Care packages for the troops, which you can see a photo of in that diary (well, not of us, but you get the idea). And be sure to check out the photo of Jon Powers! He is SO NICE. He helped me out at least twice, so in addition to being that thoughtful Iraq vet who helped Iraqi orphans when he got home, he's also plain and simple a gentleman in a time where we see less and less chivalry. Also, and this will warm everyone's heart -- when he saw my JK pin, he said that John Kerry was his hero!!! Isn't that just wonderful to hear?

Oh, did I mention, here is Jon Powers' Act Blue page?

Okay, where was I? Oh, yes, the big highlight in terms of bigness was that Al Gore came as a surprise, appearing with Speaker Nancy Pelosi. That was a lot of fun, and I guess it made a big media splash. However, my favorite speakers were: Lawrence Lessig

And Van Jones:

They were fantastic. I also caught some great panels, probably my favorite on viral videos, with The Young Turks and Brave New Films there. Also a Q & A with Richard Clarke grew me a few more brain cells. I also met people who ... knew who I was on line. One guy, who is not a fan, cornered me in an elevator. I didn't remember him. Frankly, I still don't. But he did write a nice diary about Austin here:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/7/16/105425/293/791/552459

However, other than Eddie C, I actually had people come up to me and say something nice, or that they had rec'd some of my diaries. That was nice, and I may add that the people who liked my diaries were very normal, down to Earth, and super nice -- kind of like most Kerry supporters!

One of the biggest things that happened was when we were talking with a fellow conventioneer and gay activist from the Austin area. Somehow AIDS came up, and when we told him -- oh, by the way, the HIV travel ban had been lifted -- well, the outpouring of emotion was incredible. Meanwhile, I see the fact that that bill passed has gotten so little attention. Only one diary on Kos, I see. But let's be clear that Kerry's good work here will have a MAJOR impact on a lot of people, and I witnessed that in person.

1. Of course, it's a year away, but the fact that Netroots Nation will be in Pittsburgh next year
is ... interesting. Hmmm ... who else is in Pittsburgh? Just something to consider for next year -- maybe we could do a Kerry meet up, ESPECIALLY if perhaps someone appears at the convention who is from Pittsburgh. Of course, this is all speculation on my part, but it doesn't seem all that far fetched. So just consider the convention next year:

Netroots Nation 2009: Pittsburgh, Aug. 13-16

To our friends in Texas and our speakers, sponsors, attendees and volunteers, we can't thank you enough for helping make Netroots Nation 2008 a huge success. We're already in planning mode for our next gathering.

On Saturday night, we announced that Netroots Nation 2009 will be held in Pittsburgh, PA, August 13-16. Registration is already open, so reserve your spot now!.

We selected Pittsburgh for a lot of reasons. One of our primary goals in choosing a host city is to provide an opportunity to not only bring together existing local and regional progressive communities, but also help create new ones. And our choice allows us to bring in progressive communities from Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan and beyond.

A new priority in 2009 will be greening our convention, and Pittsburgh is the perfect city to kick off this initiative. The David L. Lawrence Convention Center is the first and largest LEED certified in the country, and the city is a leader in green building, with more square footage than any other city in the country. In the coming weeks, we'll be rolling out our full plan to create a carbon-neutral event.

Plus, both the convention center and the official hotel are union venues. We're continually appreciative of the support we receive from our union partners like Change to Win, SEIU, Teamsters, UNITE HERE and United Healthcare Workers West and look forward to working with them in a city with such a rich union history.

Just like Austin, our 2009 host city is near a vibrant shopping and cultural district. There are nearly 100 restaurants within a few blocks of the convention center and a local farmers market. And Pittsburgh is conveniently accessible to large parts of the Northeast and Midwest by rail.

We've got about 100 tickets left at our lowest price ($175), so register now to get the best rate.

See you in Pittsburgh!

Hmmm ... who has been on the forefront for green building in Pittsburgh?

2. Thanks for all this information about...
...both this year's gathering and next year's plans. You know, the first dailyKos was in Las Vegas...a four hour drive from where I live. Every time I see the coverage (which is growing each year :) ) I could kick myself for not going to that first meeting.

Maybe next year...:hi:

8. that sounds great
it's good to hear about the reaction people had and that most of them are not like some of the nasty posters you see on DU, Kos and elsewhere.

9. This poster thinks like me -- Lessig and Van Jones were the highlight speakers:

Lots of pics.

But here are direct links so you can watch those two speeches:

Great photos at the first diary, and great line up of speakers.

Sounds like JK has a lot of fans in Texas and across the country.
